SIZZLA

THE BEST OF SIZZLA

One of the genuine stars in the reggae world, Sizzla has established himself as a whirlwind of energy and righteousness, simultaneously inspiring minds while setting fire to the dance. It is therefore only fitting that the music of Kalonji receives this double disc greatest hits treatment, a meticulous effort chronicling the rise of the enigmatic deejay. Focusing primarily on the earlier hits of Sizzla’s career, the collection includes must-have tracks such as “Black Woman & Child”, “One Away” and “Like Mountain”. The LP also features some underground tracks that Sizzla devotees will be glad to get their hands on and new fans will be able to discover for the first time. Listening to the CD from beginning to end allows the listener to chart the musical evolution of the dancehall prophet, and reveals his growth as an artist. What separates this compilation from a 5 dollar mix-CD you can find at your local flea market is the quality of the music and the comprehensive and attractive packaging. The fold-out includes an informative bio, as well as background on each of the tracks gracing the double disc set. A must for the collection of any serious reggae collector, The Saga Continues offers the essential Sizzla, and as its name implies, promises more to come.

RIDDIM DRIVEN RENEGADE

The latest addition to VP Records' Riddim Driven collection is the popular "Renegade" riddim that's been everywhere recently. 20 tracks deep, the CD finds number of DJs ripping the jittery and rocking beat.Sizzla comes fierce with the title track "Renegade", with a gruffer than usual voice and an addictive chant. Chaka Demus makes a solid contribution with "Gimmi De Vibes" and Future Troubles rips a unique flow on his hip-hop-esque toasting track "Jedi". Other noteworthy songs include "How It A Go" by Capleton and "Look" by Elephant Man.The CD runs a bit long at 73 minutes, but the rhythm is solid enough to keep your attention for most of the play time. A stuttering, robotic funk pattern gives the beat a relentless drive, and it's by no means a longshot to say that "Renegade" will be one of the more inescapable riddims this summer. The Riddim Driven series is developing into a classic catalogue of dancehall tracks that rivals Greensleeves own rhythm series in its efforts to give reggae fans the newest and best tunes. Solid and memorable, the release of “Renegade” maintains VP’s commitment to quality.
